This is a conversation happening in more Wellington living rooms than you’d think, and almost nowhere else out loud. One partner, often twenty or thirty years into a marriage, starts to understand something about their sexuality or gender that they didn’t have language for earlier in life. And suddenly a marriage that was built on one set of assumptions is standing on genuinely new ground.

There is no single right outcome here, and I’d be lying to you if I pretended there was. Some couples find their way to a completely new kind of relationship, one that’s more honest than what came before. Some grieve the marriage they thought they were in, and that grief is real and deserves real space. Some find both things are true at once.

Whatever your marriage becomes on the other side of this, it deserves to get there with both of you fully known, not carefully managed.

What I can tell you is that the couples who do best are the ones who stop trying to manage the discovery and start actually talking to each other about it, with real support in the room. That’s the work, and it’s work I take seriously.

If this is close to where you are, EFT Sex Therapy is a place to start that conversation properly.
